The Sacred Play: Why Fun and Creativity Are Essential to Your Spiritual Wellbeing

If you're anything like me, you've probably spent a lot of time doing the "work." The shadow work, the healing, the deep dives into why you are the way you are. And don't get me wrong—that work is important. But somewhere along the way, many of us forgot something essential: we're also here to play.
Fun and creativity aren't just nice-to-haves. They're not rewards we earn after we've healed enough or accomplished enough. They are medicine for the soul—and honestly, for the body and mind too.

When Did We Stop Playing?
Think back to when you were a child. You didn't need permission to create. You drew pictures that made no sense, made up songs, built forts out of blankets, and played pretend for hours. There was no judgment, no "Is this good enough?" You just did it because it felt good.
Then life happened. School told us there was a right and wrong way to do things. Adults said we needed to be practical. Bills showed up. Responsibilities piled on. And slowly, that creative spark got buried under the weight of "adulting."
I know this firsthand. I was a stay-at-home mother of 4 for many years. My days were filled with endless tasks—packing lunches, breaking up sibling squabbles, doing laundry that somehow multiplied overnight, and making sure everyone else was fed, clothed, and okay. Play? Creativity? Those felt like luxuries I couldn't afford. I was in survival mode, pouring everything I had into my kids & my husband while my own cup ran completely dry.
For those of us who are highly sensitive or empathic, this loss can hit even harder. We absorb so much of the world's heaviness—and our family's heaviness—that play can feel almost… frivolous. Like we don't deserve it, or there's too much serious stuff to deal with first. But here's the truth: that's exactly why we need it most.
Creativity Is Your Birthright
You are a creative being. Not because you paint or write or make music (though you might), but because you are creating every single day. Your thoughts, your words, your choices—they're all acts of creation. When you consciously tap into creativity, you're aligning with the same energy that made the stars, the oceans, and you.
Creativity doesn't have to look a certain way. It can be cooking a meal with love, arranging flowers, doodling in a notebook, dancing in your living room, or rearranging your space. It's any moment where you let something flow through you without overthinking it.
Looking back at those years with my kids, I realize the moments I felt most alive weren't the perfectly executed birthday parties or the clean house. They were the messy art projects, the impromptu dance parties in the kitchen, the times I let go of the to-do list and just played with them. Those moments fed my soul in ways I didn't fully appreciate until much later.
For empaths and HSPs(highly sensitive people), creative expression is also a powerful way to move energy. All that stuff you absorb? It needs somewhere to go. When you create, you give it an outlet. You transform heaviness into something beautiful—or at least something that's yours.
Fun Is Not Frivolous—It's Fuel
Here's something I wish someone had told me years ago: fun raises your vibration. When you laugh, when you play, when you do something just because it brings you joy, you're literally shifting your energy. You move out of survival mode and into a space where healing can actually happen.
Our bodies hold onto stress, trauma, and fear. We carry it in our shoulders, our stomachs, our hearts. But when we allow ourselves to experience genuine fun—not numbing, not escaping, but real, embodied joy—something shifts. The nervous system calms. The heart opens. The mind quiets.
And spiritually? Fun connects you to the present moment. It's hard to worry about the future or replay the past when you're fully immersed in something that lights you up. That presence is the spiritual practice.
Permission Slip: You're Allowed to Enjoy Your Life
If you're waiting for permission to have fun, here it is. You don't have to earn it. You don't have to finish your healing journey first (spoiler: it never really "finishes"). You don't have to be further along than you are.
You are allowed to laugh. You are allowed to be silly. You are allowed to make things that no one else will ever see. You are allowed to do things that serve no purpose other than making you feel alive.
In fact, I'd argue that doing these things is part of the journey. Joy isn't the destination—it's the path.
Small Ways to Bring More Play Into Your Life
If it's been a while since you let yourself play, start small:
Put on a song and move your body however it wants to move
Buy yourself some crayons or colored pencils and just see what happens
Take a different route on your walk and notice what you discover
Cook something new without following a recipe exactly
Watch something that makes you laugh—really laugh
Say yes to something spontaneous
The goal isn't to be "good" at any of it. The goal is to feel.
You Deserve Lightness
I know how heavy life can feel, especially when you feel everything so deeply. But you weren't put here just to carry weight. You were put here to experience the full spectrum—including the light, the laughter, the wonder.
So today, I'm inviting you to ask yourself: What would feel like play right now? And then, if you can, go do that thing. Not because it's productive. Not because it will lead anywhere. But simply because your soul is asking for it.
That's not just self-care. That's spiritual practice.
